Self Portrait Round 2

Sometime ago I decided to take self portraits as a way to practice a little more and try to improve my techiniques.

After I made this resolution, I got robbed and lost my two cameras. But I didn't want to quit this little experiment, so I'm trying to do it with the resources I have and this are the results:

Nothing new nor technically good, but I'm getting more comfortable with my face in pictures everyday...

Family photobook, so good!

There are those who love, take several photos and store in them in a great albums to show to posterity. There are those who like a little less than half thought unfashionable or have to do is unaccustomed. The truth is that the family albums will always be a little piece of history for us all.

Lori Rivas-Huneke can, however, break the resistance of less passionated and steal the hearts of those who are already aficionados of family photograph. She is a talented photographer with a studio in California that makes creative unusual images and, at the same time, keeps the air of traditional portraits. Check it out:

Tim Walker: pure romance

Tim Walker is a fantastic photographer. He has published many different and interesting works on Vogue. His unique style can't be unnoticed.

His career began in 1994 as a freelance photographer in London. He moved to NY, some time later as Richard Avedon. When he returned to the UK, focused on portraits and documentaries. At 25, photographed the first fashion shoot and that's when his story began to change.

The Victory and Alfred Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London included photographs of Walker in its permanent collection. His first major exhibition took place in 2008, the Design Museum, also in London. In the same year, Tim Walker released the book "Pictures".

David LaChapelle: a party of colors!

David LaChapelle is one of the most interesting and innovative photographers of this generation, proving every now and then that photography is an art and that are few photographers who understand this. His conceptual photography, full of colors and saturation, has a deep connection with the bizarre and the fantastic.

I also love the fact that he started his career at the 80s and worked with Andy Warhol, when he started to photograph great artists. He directed some video clips and documentary videos. LaChapelle worked with Christina Aguilera, Moby, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, The Vines, Elton John, No Doubt…

Now, David LaChapelle is more into fine art photography again, putting together some big exhibitions all over the world. I’m really hopping he comes to Brazil! (:

Polaroid love

I really, really love Polaroids. Sometimes I think everybody does, because is impossible to not fall in love with that feeling of having the photo in hands in the same time you take it. So, I got thrilled when I heard about the Polaroid Z340 Instant Camera that is available for sale at Photojojo.

Photography and self steem

I finally got to the end of my photography course. It was a great journey and I could fall in love for this lovely art again. To celebrate this new moment of life and this new achievement I'm developing a work with lots of self portraits which is about self steem and acceptance. It will be part of a small exposition my classmates and I will do to close the course.

One of mine inspiration on self portraits is Lara Jade. She's a young girl who started shotting herself and now she is this awesome fashion photographer. If you don't know her work, you should explore her site a little!

Trash the Dress

My friend and partner Catarina, from "We are Beautiful Girls", introduce me to this new trend of briadal's photoshoot. It's called "Trash the Dress", and is about destroying your wedding dress to produce a very artistic photobook. Of course the photo shoot must take place after the wedding and the bride must be detached the idea of saving the dress for the next generation. .

It looks like summer!

Finally the sky is blue, outside is hot and feels like summer here. We made a little study about summer photoshoting last week and it was very delightful. I'd like to show a little bit of our work and present to you the beautiful Carol Arantes.

1- Canon Equipment

I use Canon to photograph for 5 years now and I Love my equipment. I tried Nikon a little bit and I know it’s an excellent brand as well, but I got used to the simplicity of Canon commands and is cheaper then Nikon. (I recommend Amazon to look at prices)

2- Lomography: La Sardina

 The Idea of get back to basics and accept the distortions as a form of art is why I’m dying to try a Lomo, like La Sardina ( pretty 35mm) . And the price is quite accessible. Here’s where you can get one!

It’s one of the prettiest ways of take a good care of your pictures.  I put some hours looking for supplies at scrapbook.com often. I really don’t know if there is another good site to buy supplies on the internet. The project above is from Tara Anderson, one of my favorite artists! She’s so inspiring!

Most of photography lovers who lived the 80’s have a especial crush for the Polaroid One Step. After “The Impossible Project”, the flame became a fire! They really adorable!

6- Lightroom

I love this Adobe software. You can work with the light, brightness and contrast in a artistic and different way from Photoshop or Fireworks. Lightroom is great to organize your albums as well! More about it here.

7- Flickr

Flickr is the bigger photos repository of the web. Is easy to use, for free, and full of pretty pictures!

I adore family albums. Is a tradition I think everybody should adopt, even if your family is you and your puppy! I take so many pictures of my lovely ones, but never print it. Is one of my new years eve projects! If you think you lose the perfect moments because you’re without your camera, you can do like Elsie, from A Beautiful Mess. She did this album using cell phone pictures (hello instagram addicteds)!

It’s the new version of the classical The Art of Photography (originally published in 1994). It’s a valuable collection of tips and “how to” techniques, useful for all kinds of photographers. The author is Bruce Barnbaum and the book is available on Amazon!
